Cayenne S Hybrid – Porsche’s Aim towards Peak Performance

Cayenne S Hybrid – Porsche’s Aim towards Peak Performance

Sharing a platform with the Audi Q7, an ICE with the Audi S4, the crossover Cayenne S Hybrid is the product of ingenuity, and Porsche’s first venture into the hybrid scene.

The Cayenne S Hybrid is a parallel full hybrid, it has a 3.0-liter DOHC V6 to a 47-hp electric motor/starter/generator powered by a 240-cell NiMH (nickel metal hydride) battery pack, weighing a meager 152 pounds and producing a peak 288 volts. The powertrain provides 380 bhp and 427 lb-feet of torque. “The battery pack fits in the former spare-tire well. An eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, with two overdrive gears, is a subtle snub to new-fangled CVTs.”

“Porsche adds eco-friendliness to the Cayenne’s elegant performance.” With an EPA estimated 24 mpg (combined), it allows coasting up to 97 mph using only electric power. The Cayenne can travel on all-electric power up to 31-40 mph. And like most hybrids, the Cayenne employs regenerative braking and a stop/start ICE function. “Two power modes, E-power (all-electric) and E-boost (complementary electric boost) complete the package.”

And following Porsche’s tradition it’s lavishly strewn with interior components including HD infotainment interface, Bluetooth/USB capability, adaptive cruise control, navigation system, 16-speaker, surround-sound audio system with rear DVD display, and rear-view park assist. Lastly, “The Cayenne S Hybrid features a cornucopia of front and rear airbags, 4-wheel ABS, braking assist, sturdy A-pillars, traction control, stability control and a TPMS, all to protect its 4,398-pound body.”

A Short Review for the 2010 Cadillac CTS

A Short Review for the 2010 Cadillac CTS

Cadillac’s second generation CTS is winning accolades here and there, making it a compelling alternative to its Japanese and German rivals. And if you think we’re running out of things to say about this sedan, you couldn’t have been more mistaken. Here are some fast facts, good and bad, about the 2010 Cadillac CTS:

The pricing of this vehicle starts at $35,165 or $41,565 with the 3.6L engine. But if you want the keys to a luxury model, you’ll need just about $37,865. Performance variants start at $39,765, while the Premium car goes for $46,865. This doesn’t include all the perks and incentives that you could get on the dealer where you’re buying this car.

The CTS sedan is still offered with either a base 270-hp 3.0L V6, or a 304-hp 3.6L unit. Though the latter is hands down the best pick because of how it delivers the power, the former can also be a fairly good choice as it performs quietly and efficiently. Fuel economy is rated at 18/27 mpg regardless of the engine and the drive train it carries. Sport models get a stiffer suspension and 18-inc wheels, while Premium models get 19.

And after you’ve spend an ample amount of time behind its steering wheel, you’ll immediately realize why this sedan has been a leading contender in the market after four years since its introduction. It delivers excellent refinement, acceleration, and handling which is way above its competitors.

The Honda CR-Z: not the New CRX, but a Smaller, More Fun Version of the Insight

The Honda CR-Z: not the New CRX, but a Smaller, More Fun Version of the Insight

Though the Honda CR-Z fell short when it comes to living up with the reputation of the CRX, it doesn’t mean that it has no other things going on for it. In fact, if the CRX is considered to be a small, fun version of the civic, the CR-Z can be deemed the same thing for the Insight.

Both the Insight and the CR-Z hybrids have a lot more in common than most people think. They’re based from the same platform as the Fit. They use the same Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system, only the CR-Z ditches the 1.3l engine for the 1.5l unit used in the Fit. But what makes the CR-Z a shade better is that it’s said to fix the complaints that are initially seen on the Insight like ride quality. On top of that, most reviews find that this vehicle has the best steering and braking of any hybrid to date. So if you’re looking for an earth-friendly car, but not in the expense of its drivability, this vehicle could be an ideal choice for the whole family.

Car Review: 2010 Toyota Highlander

Car Review: 2010 Toyota Highlander

One thing that’s immediately noticeable about this vehicle is its size. It measures about 188.4-inches in length, 75.2-inches across and tipping the scales at close to 4,000 lbs. However, this size doesn’t hinder you from seeing the artistry on its design. Every door and fenders are lined-up as they should be as well its hood and rear hatch lid. As for paint finish, it’s glossy and has an orange peel generally noted by its absence, even on dark colored ones.

Space would never be your problem once you’re inside. The second row legroom has 38.3-inches to stretch the legs, while the interior space has a clearance of more than 40-inches, all the way back which is aided by a fairly angular roof line.

As for the powertrain, two combinations are offered on the regular 2010 model, a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, teamed with a six-speed automatic and a 3.5-liter V6 that comes with a five-speed slushbox. It’s rated at 187 horsepower at 5100 rpm and just 186 ft-lbs of torque at 4100 revs, the four-cylinder is not the best choice for this type of vehicle.

The 2010 Toyota Highlander is one of the best options for a family car today. Why? If you’re looking for decent build quality, good feature content, a comfortable ride, and capacious interior, this ride has it all.

BMW ActiveHybrid 7: Going Green in Style

BMW ActiveHybrid 7: Going Green in Style

BMW, one of the most popular automakers today has included the ActiveHybrid 7 to its new lineup of hybrid cars. But unlike the dual-mode system in the X6, this vehicle is designed to get the most out of the ecological and fuel economy advantages while reducing power, weight, and space penalties of more complex systems.

This car is remarkably 165 lbs heavier than a normally equipped 7 with a lithium battery that takes up only 1.4 cubic feet of trunk space. Though it has limited electrical capabilities, the small motor is designed to make up for it.

It has the same 8-speed ZF transmission as a regular 7, but has a smaller torque converter and higher gear ratios that takes advantage of the electric motor’s low-speed torque. The motor itself sits between the engine and transmission adding 55 hp and 65 ft-lb torque for a total of 440 hp and 455 ft-lb torque when combined with the car’s twin turbo V8. EPA figures have not yet been officially released, but it’s expected to get 15% better fuel economy than base 7.

Starting price for the ActiveHybrid 7 is $103,000 for the short wheel base model or $106,000 for the long wheel base.

Car Review: 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6

Car Review: 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6

The 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is the product of expensive and unsuccessful partnership with Daimler/Chrysler and General Motors in creating a hybrid-electric powertrain that would be suitable for use in large, heavy trucks and SUVs.

It employs a transmission that operates like a seven-speed automatic and utilizes two electric components that come on either independently at low speeds or in concert with the gasoline engine. This makes its total horsepower to 480 while torque reaches 575 ft-lbs from 1750-4500 rpm. Like any other hybrids, the X6 use regenerative braking that helps recharge that large battery pack mounted under the rear cargo area.

Aesthetically speaking, the ActiveHybrid gets unique 20-inch five-spoke Aero wheels and an exclusive Blue Water Metallic paint choice. It also has extra badges on the doors and rear tailgate. Inside, the X6 has comfortable seating for four and sloping rear roofline that trims huge amounts of space from the rear cargo area.

All in all, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is a solid vehicle that can accommodate the whole family with its spacious cabin and cargo area. It’s also a perfect ride for long road trips with its superb powerplant.

Car Review: 2010 Honda Civic Sedan

Car Review: 2010 Honda Civic Sedan

A far cry from its predecessor which is the 1973 model, the 2010 Honda Civic Sedan has able to retain some endearing features of the earlier model.

Compared to the older Civic, the current vehicle is 37.5-inches longer, 9.7-inches wider and some 1,187 lbs heavier. It boasts other features as well including anti-lock brakes, dual stage airbags, available stability control and standard AM/FM stereo with CD player. As for styling, it definitely is distinct compared with other similar types of vehicle. However, it seems like that’s all what this vehicle has to offer when it comes to appearance.

Like all 2010 sedan models, the vehicle is also equipped with Honda’s 1.8-liter inline four- cylinder engine. With a single overhead camshaft head with iVTEC variable valve timing, it’s rated at 140 horsepower at 6300 rpm and 128 ft-lbs of torque at 4300. But what’s special about this rig is its handling. The steering is nicely weighted having good feedback at slow and high speeds. Turning around corners won’t be a problem as it’s surprisingly neutral given the front weight bias and front-drive powertrain. One can even power the Civic through corners fairly quickly and smoothly, even under wet conditions.

Taking it all into consideration, the 2010 Honda Civic Sedan is the best choice in terms of price, style, and drivability. A perfect choice for when you want to buy a family car.
